BATON ROUGE – Steven J. Levine, a partner in Phelps Dunbar’s Baton Rouge office, was elected a Fellow of the American College of Environmental Lawyers at the organization’s annual meeting October 28. He is the only Louisiana attorney to serve as a fellow of the ACOEL.
New Orleans of counsel John Manard Jr., who has served as a fellow of the organization, also was promoted to Emeritus status.
The American College of Environmental Lawyers is limited in size to less than 250 attorneys throughout the country. The process of evaluating potential candidates takes months and involves vetting nominees through current Fellows and gathering other information about the candidate and his or her qualifications. The nomination process can only begin from within the organization and proceeds without the individual knowing he or she has been proposed.
Mr. Levine practices in the area of litigation with a focus on environmental counseling. Mr. Levine has wide experience in environmental litigation arising from enforcement, toxic tort and business-related claims. As a significant part of these engagements, he works closely with experts in a variety of professional fields. He routinely interacts with the Environmental Protection Agency in several regions and state environmental regulatory agencies in several states in matters relating to litigation, permitting, compliance orders and penalty orders. Additionally, he counsels lending and real estate institutions on such matters as environmental assessments, contractual arrangements and wetlands issues.
