Phelps Dunbar Offers Tsunami Relief to CARE

Phelps Dunbar is participating in the tsunami disaster relief effort with a $20,000 contribution to the organization CARE, one of the world's largest private international humanitarian organizations.

CARE has had operations in the affected countries of India, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar for years and was on the spot when the earthquake and deadly tsunami struck. The CARE staff onsite are distributing food, clean water, shelter, clothing, soap and other hygiene products and basic medicines.

The money that the firm raised is in large part from donations by the partners throughout the firm’s offices as well as a contribution from the firm. In addition, the firm will offer employees the opportunity to donate on behalf of the firm directly to CARE through their Web site.

"Phelps Dunbar attorneys work and live in Louisiana, Florida, Mississippi and Texas, areas that frequently bear the brunt of natural disasters." said Richard N. Dicharry, Managing Partner. "Besides this common denominator, we are all Americans committed to giving a helping hand to those in need."

Phelps Dunbar hopes that the contribution will encourage other businesses in the Gulf Coast region to help the survivors of this epidemic disaster.

CARE works with poor communities in more than 70 countries around the world to find lasting solutions to poverty and to deliver relief in emergencies. CARE has been working in Sri Lanka and the other affected South Asian areas since 1956. Support for the South Asia Emergency will provide resources that allow CARE staff the flexible funding and other support needed to ensure that crisis-affected communities not only can survive the immediate crisis but can rebuild their lives and livelihoods in the coming years.

Phelps Dunbar is a regional law firm of more than 250 attorneys, with offices in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, Louisiana; Jackson, Tupelo, and Gulfport, Mississippi; Houston, Texas; Tampa, Florida; and London, England.
