HISTORY

Spanning three centuries and over 150 years, Phelps Dunbar has been a major influence not only in the practice of law, but also in the development of our local communities. We have grown and prospered from our earliest days and now have seven offices and over 250 attorneys. The following time line captures some of the contributions of past and present firm members as lawyers and civic-minded individuals. We are proud to recognize their contributions and acknowledge that the course of Phelps Dunbar's future has been set by the accomplishments of our past.

1853
December 20 - Joseph Dirrhammer takes oath of attorneys. The Phelps Dunbar history begins.

1868
Firm partner William Wirt Howe named to the Louisiana Supreme Court.

1875
Firm assists in the formation of the New Orleans Pacific Railway Company, which ultimately was acquired by the Union Pacific Railroad Company, and begins a relationship that has lasted over 130 years.

1880
Charles Erasmus Fenner is appointed Associate Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court - later joins the firm.

1894
Firm moves to the first New Orleans "skyscraper," the 11-story Maritime Building.

1897
Howe elected President of the American Bar Association.


1900
Howe is appointed U.S. District Attorney for the Eastern District of Louisiana by President William McKinley.

1910
Esmond Phelps becomes an associate of the firm.

1915
Charles E. Dunbar, Jr. becomes an associate of the firm.

1929
Dunbar is appointed National Counselor of the United States Chamber of Commerce.
