Phelps Dunbar encourages its attorneys to represent pro
bono clients. The firm gives full credit to attorneys for
their work on pro bono matters and provides the highest
quality of representation the firm offers to its paying
clients. The firm's pro bono cases have included divorce,
custody and adoption matters, landlord/tenant disputes,
estate (succession) work, child abuse and neglect, tort
defense, and consumer problems. In addition, Phelps Dunbar
attorneys volunteer on a regular basis to assist with client
interviews, intake, and referral for the New Orleans Pro
Bono Project.
Phelps Dunbar actively participates in the Pro Bono Challenge
that the Chief Justice of the Louisiana Supreme Court issued
to commit to handle one pro bono matter each year for every
three lawyers in the firm. The first year the Chief Justice
issued the challenge, Phelps Dunbar won the award for Best
Firm Participation by the New Orleans Pro Bono Project.
Phelps Dunbar attorneys also have handled death penalty
cases, and prevailed in State of Louisiana v. Kyles, a United
States Supreme Court case that established a new law regarding
the responsibilities of prosecutors. Phelps Dunbar attorneys
have represented other criminal defendants at trial in serious
felony matters.
Phelps Dunbar provides its employees with opportunities
to participate in other community service activities, such
as the Christmas in October program, in which members of
the firm help renovate and rehabilitate dilapidated housing
in inner city neighborhoods.
A Phelps Dunbar partner is the Pro Bono Coordinator for
the firm. The Pro Bono Coordinator manages, supervises and
mentors the firm's attorneys in their pro bono efforts.
For the last several years, a Phelps Dunbar partner has
served on the Board of Directors of the New Orleans Pro
Bono Project. This year a Phelps Dunbar partner also serves
on the IOLTA Grants Committee of the Louisiana Bar Foundation.
