TUPELO, Miss. – Phelps Dunbar is pleased to announce Greg Pirkle was recognized among the Top 10 lawyers in Mississippi at the Mississippi Business Journal’s 2016 Leadership in Law program Tuesday, December 13 at the Old Capital Inn in Jackson.
Mr. Pirkle, managing partner of Phelps Dunbar’s Tupelo office, has practiced law in Tupelo for 28 years.
His legal practice focuses on federal and state taxation, with an emphasis on taxation of business entities, estate planning and exempt organizations. His business practice includes advising clients on the tax implications of business transactions such as mergers and reorganizations, property exchanges and executive compensation.
In the estate planning area, he advises clients on the maximum use of federal credits and preservation of wealth through the use of trusts, partnerships, closely held businesses, private foundations and charitable trusts. His involvement in exempt organization includes issues of inurement, compliance in bond financing, entity restructuring and joint ventures.
A member of The Mississippi Bar, the American Bar and the Lee County Bar associations, Mr. Pirkle has consistently been recognized by his peers in The Best Lawyers in America and Mid-South Super Lawyers for excellence in the practice of law.
For the past several years, Mr. Pirkle has served as chairman of the Tupelo Major Thoroughfare Project, which is responsible for making decisions and allocations of roadwork to improve transportation throughout the Tupelo area. Under his leadership, the project was successful in planning, building and completing the new Highway 6 bypass in 2014.
Mr. Pirkle also is a chairman of the board of directors for the CREATE Foundation, Inc., which is a community development foundation that helps to bring businesses and jobs to Northeast Mississippi. He also sits on the community board for North Mississippi Health Services, Inc. and the board of directors for New Albany-based BNA Bancshares.
Mr. Pirkle is actively involved in a number of civic and community organizations, including serving as a past-president and board member of the Boys and Girls Club of North Mississippi, the Harrisburg Cultural and Social Services Center Inc., the Tupelo chapter of Junior Achievement, the Rotary Club of Tupelo and the United Way of NEMS Inc. He also is a member of the Tupelo Community Chorus, a participant in Tupelo Community Theater productions and active with his church, Calvary Baptist, where he is a Deacon and Trustee.
The Leadership in Law program, now in its seventh year, honored 40 members of the state’s legal community and the 2016 Lawyer of the Year. Honorees were selected based on legal success and qualities of character that make only a few stand out.
