Governmental Relations

The legislative and governmental relations practice at Phelps Dunbar is comprised of attorneys with a broad range of governmental experience who represent the interests of clients at the federal, state and local levels.

Our attorneys actively represent governmental and private clients before Congress, as well as federal, state and local administrative agencies, on both a continuing basis and as particular needs arise. The firm has been instrumental in the adoption of laws enhancing the ability of clients to conduct business in the states where they are located, and in the modification of legislative proposals to reflect more fairly the realities of a client's business environment.

Representative areas of experience include:

  • Direct lobbying of the client's position on legislative and funding issues with federal and state legislative bodies;
  • Scheduling opportunities to network with key legislative members;
  • Arranging formal presentations of the client's concerns to committees;
  • Drafting of proposed legislation and amendments;
  • Analyzing the legal effect of bills upon the client's interests;
  • Building coalitions among other affected interest groups;
  • Preparing and presenting testimony before legislative committees;
  • Establishing "grassroots" support for legislative agenda; and
  • Supporting media efforts in furtherance of the client's position.

The combination of the experience of our attorneys and Phelps Dunbar's regional capabilities provides our clients and those we seek to represent with a unique, contemporary perspective on today's legislative environment.
