Richard started his career at Phelps Dunbar in 1978 in the admiralty practice. After seven years of an active litigation practice, he refocused his practice in 1985 on insurance coverage work for the London insurance market. Since 1985, Richard has counseled and represented insurers with regard to a variety of liabilities, with particular emphasis on environmental and health hazard exposures.

On January 1, 1995, Richard was elected chairman of the firm's management committee, a position he holds today.
