Practice

Nan is a partner and the practice coordinator of the employment law group in the New Orleans office. She practices in the areas of labor and employment, civil rights, constitutional law, consumer credit litigation, and general business litigation. Her employment litigation practice includes representing employers in the defense of discrimination claims for age, sex, disability, race, religion, and workplace harassment, and handling EEOC charges and other administrative complaints through the administrative and judicial process. She also advises clients on a variety of human resource issues, assists in developing employee policies and procedures and provides training to company management and personnel on a variety of employment related topics on corporate compliance issues.

Nan has been awarded the "AV" rating by the Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory, which is the highest possible rating for legal ability and ethical standards. Nan has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America from 2003-2008. She is also among a select group of employment lawyers listed from 2003-2007 in a nationwide client survey published in Chambers USA, America's Leading Lawyers for Business.

Nan writes and speaks often on behalf of management interests on employment-related topics and is also the managing editor and a contributing editor of the firm's monthly H.R. Alert. In 2003, she co-authored a law review article entitled "Drafting Non-Competition Agreements in Louisiana: A Drafter's Dilemma," 49 Loyola Law Review 809 (2003). Prior to joining the firm, Nan was Judicial Clerk to the Honorable A.J. McNamara and Judicial Extern to the Honorable Martin L.C. Feldman, both of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

Representative Matters

  • Representation of both private and public employers and insurers in all facets of employment-related matters, from counseling and advising to defense of administrative and judicial complaints of harassment, discrimination and retaliation. Also assists in compliance issues related to affirmative action policy and in oversight of Office of Federal Contract Compliance Program's audits.
  • Representation of governmental entities and/or their insurers in suits alleging civil rights violations, constitutional rights violations and workplace harassment, discrimination and retaliation claims.
  • Drafting and design of employment policies and procedures covering a myriad of employment/labor topics such as family and medical leave, workplace harassment, sexual harassment, compensation policies, military leave, etc. and employment related agreements.
  • Counsel employers on the Americans With Disabilities Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, pregnancy leave, military leave and other leave statutes, particularly in so far as it relates to employees who have been injured and seek to return to work or seek reasonable accommodation, leave and/or light duty.
  • Counsel employers on employee wage payment issues and overtime issues as it relates to salary/hourly employees.
  • Counsel and assist employers on risk management tools, including workplace harassment and supervisory policies and training.
  • Litigation, including extensive trial experience in both jury trials and bench trials in state and federal court.
  • Arbitration and mediation, including extensive experience as both advocate and neutral in numerous employment related matters.
